Yang Zhang
BSc IBE, Class of 2023
High School: Hefei No.1 High School

Advances in Economics Business and Management Research上,录入CPCI和CNKI双检索。

Yang Zhang: Exploring research during my undergraduate studies
Yang Zhang is a graduand of International Business Economics at Nottingham University Business School China (NUBS China). In her story, whether she was a research assistant, successfully publishing papers in an international journal, or choosing a gap year for research after graduation, all of these show that she has the determination to persevere.
Although being taught subjects in English was a challenge for Yang Zhang at the beginning, the preliminary modules offered by the university provided her with great help. She explains "UNNC's curriculum is very logical, with the first year mainly focused on learning academic English, comprehensively improving the language abilities of students in four areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing."
Furthermore, to develop her ability to think in English, she also joined the cross-cultural communication organisation on campus, Vis-a-Vis. In this organisation that uses English for their communications and work, her English was further improved. At present, Yang is working as an interview translator for a professor's research.
During her undergraduate studies, Yang developed strong academic writing skills due to a lot of practice from her coursework. During the writing process, she gradually discovered her interests and completed two papers that have been published in the international journal Advances in Economics, Business and Management Research. One paper discusses the vast gap in the scope of application between piece rate and efficiency wages in recent years and the other examines the impacts of trait level on leadership. From the initial search for publishing channels to the multiple revisions made in later stages, she encountered significant challenges but gained great growth during the research and writing process.
The first two successful attempts at research have strengthened her confidence. In her dissertation, she turned her research interest toward the economic development of Hefei, her hometown. After deciding on the research topic, she took the initiative to invite Martin Lockett, Professor in Strategic Management at NUBS China, to be her supervisor. The dissertation was repeatedly revised and refined for a whole year and got a high score of 80 points achieving the publication standards.
In the dissertation, she collated more than 30 successful cases of "entrepreneurial government" actions in Hefei, investigating the reasons and summarising the rules by combining New Structural Economics and Entrepreneurial State Theories. In addition, she extended the above data analysis and conclusion to other general economies, and compared and analysed the reasons for the economic development or backwardness of these regions.
Currently, Yang Zhang choosing a gap year after graduation to focus on the research she is currently doing. She has become a short-term research assistant at MIT in a climate change project and is preparing to be a long-term research assistant at BI Norwegian Business School.
During her four years at UNNC, she has worked in research areas such as regional economic development, aging, enterprise management innovation, and climate change. Her interdisciplinary experience allows her to analyze problems from a more diverse perspective. "The span of these projects is not small, but because of this, I have gained a broader perspective and knowledge. Together they have nourished me and I will given back with the experience I have gained".
Through step-by-step exploration, Yang Zhang gradually discovered that research is something she truly loves. "In each research experience, I can find something that truly interests me. More importantly, the output of my research can enable me to leave a shimmer in this world".
